Grand Prix leader Alexei Kulashko sat out the MIT Rapid and was fortunate not to be passed. A win would have put McLaren into the lead, while second would have been enough for Garbett. In the event Garbett picked up 9 points for 3rd equal, leaving him just half a point adrift of Kulashko, while McLaren went home empty-handed this time but stays in third. With his MIT win Puchen Wang moves to fourth, while Lukey's win in the Wellington Rapid lifts him past NZ Champion Anthony Ker as well.

In the Under 2000 division Mistry has reclaimed second spot, with Hilton Bennett moving into third. GP leader Thornton did not add any more points, but is still well in front. Caleb Wright and Jason Wu are the big movers in the Under 1700 division, up to 2nd and 3rd, but Jeremy Browne retains a handy lead. Little change in the Under 1400 division, while in the Junior Division the top three are unchanged but Lei has surged up to fourth.

In the female division Viv Smith has made up some ground on Fairley with her clean sweep in the MIT B Tournament. Shirley Wu has jumped into fourth, ahead of Otene. NZ Senior Champion Neil Cruden has tightened his grip in the Senior division. Mitchell remains second, while Peter Morten has overtaken early leader Clive Wilson for third. Andy Chen retains his commanding lead in the Under 14 and Under 1400 division, with Michael Wu climbing to second and Andrew Maroroa now pushing Dare for third spot.

The final three events of the 2004 Global Chess Enterprises Grand Prix are coming up at the NZ Congress in Wanganui in January. As Anthony Ker proved last year, they can have a big impact on the final placings.
